Understand charges on your receipt

Your final receipt may show charges that differ from your original estimated total. Here's what each section and line item means.

Adjustments (top of receipt)

This section shows refunds for out-of-stock items or item issues like missing or damaged items.

If you see Not Charged next to an item that means the shopper refunded before checkout. You were never billed for these, so no refund will appear in your bank statement.

Charges section (bottom of receipt)

This section shows what you were charged and any refunds applied after your order completed.

Receipt line item

What it means

Original Charge

What Instacart charged you when your order completed.

Additional Charge

Items you added after placing your order increased the total. You're charged the difference between the original charge and the new total.

Adjustment Charge

The final item cost was higher than estimated. Ror example, a replacement item at a higher price, or a weighted item that came in heavier than expected. You're charged the difference.

Refund for order issue

A refund Instacart processed after your order completed.

Total Charged

Your final order total, after all charges and refunds are applied.

⚠️  Tip adjustments: Tips added or changed after delivery may appear as a separate charge on your card statement.

⚠️  Temporary authorization hold: Before your order is finalized, you may see a temporary hold for a slightly higher amount than your estimated total. This is not a final charge, it adjusts once your order is complete.

Refund not showing in your bank account

Instacart processes refunds immediately after an issue is reported. How long it takes to appear depends on your bank or card provider.

If your refund isn't showing up, check the following:

  • Same-day refunds: These don't appear as a separate line item. Instead, you'll see an adjustment to your original charge. If you received a full refund on the same day, the original charge may disappear from your statement entirely.
  • Bank processing time: Most refunds appear within 5–10 business days, depending on your financial institution.

Dispute a charge

If a charge on your receipt looks incorrect, report it directly from your order:

  1. Go to Your orders
  2. Select the relevant order.
  3. Click Report an issue.
