Upload tax exemption certificate

You can upload tax exemption certificates through the tax exemption page on the website—

  2. Select Business Settings under Manage your business.
  3. Select Tax exemptions under Business Settings.
  4. Select Add form.

You can upload tax exemption certificates through the tax exemption page in-app—

  1. Tap the account icon at the top right corner.
  2. Tap Business Settings.
  3. Tap Tax exemptions.
  4. Tap Add form.

You’ll be directed to a third-party vendor portal that accepts new certificates. Complete all information and upload your certificate.

You can add 1 certificate per state. The certificate appears under the Certificates section of the Tax exemptions page immediately after uploading.

Note, certificates expire. You receive an email with reminders to upload a new certificate before the certificate expires.

If your state isn’t listed when adding a certificate

When you add a tax exemption form, you’ll choose a state from the portal. That list is controlled by which states currently support tax exemptions through our provider and configuration.

If your state doesn’t appear in the dropdown:

  • We don’t currently support tax‑exempt purchases for that state through Instacart Business.
  • You can still place business orders; they’ll simply be taxed according to local law.

We’re actively working to expand support for more states and retailers over time, especially in states where retailers need to opt in individually to enable tax exemptions.

Identifying tax-exempt retailers

Qualifying tax-exempt retailers appear as a tag on the Business home screen. Each individual Business account needs to upload their own tax certificate.

You can also filter for tax-exempt retailers from the home page—

  1. At the top of the home page, select Show all to see a full list of stores in your area.
  2. Scroll through the gray filters at the top and select Tax exemptions.

Note, if you have a tax form associated with your retailer loyalty card, this doesn’t automatically transfer over to Instacart.

If you need more help, select Tax exemptions under the support section of the Tax Exemptions page.
