Add a payment method
You can add payment methods at any time—before, after, or while placing an order.
To add a payment on the Instacart website—
- At the top left, click the 3 horizontal lines
- Click Your account settings
- Click Payment methods
- Click Add next to the payment method you want to add to your account
- Enter card information and billing address. Then click Continue
To add a payment in the Instacart app—
- Tap the Account icon in the upper right corner
- Tap Settings
- Select the payment method under Payment methods
- Tap Add next to the payment method you would like to add to your account
- Enter your card information manually or by using your phone’s camera to scan your card.
- Manually—
- Enter your payment method details.
- Enter billing zipcode.
- Tap Save.
- Scan your card—
- Tap Scan.
- Tap Continue.
- Scan the front and back of your payment method.
- Confirm payment details and billing zipcode.
- Tap Save.
- Manually—
If you need to update a previous payment method, you must remove it from your account and then add it again with the correct payment information.
Remove a payment method
To remove a payment method on the Instacart website—
- At the top left, click the 3 horizontal lines
- Click Your account settings
- Click Payment methods
- Click Delete next to the payment method you want to remove
In the app—
- Tap the Account icon in the upper right corner
- Tap Settings
- Tap Payment methods
- Tap the pencil icon in the upper right-hand corner. Then tap the red circle on the left-hand side next to the card you want to remove. Then tap Delete
Paying with PayPal
Add PayPal as a form of payment to your Instacart account—
- Go to Settings
- Select Debit/Credit, PayPal, and more under Payment methods
- Select Add next to Paypal
- This redirects you to the Paypal login flow
- Follow the prompts to log into Paypal
- Select Update
PayPal restrictions—
- At this time, prescriptions, CBD/THC, and alcohol can’t be purchased using PayPal. If you’d like to place an order containing these items, you will need to select an alternative payment method.
- You can only add 1 PayPal account to your Instacart account. To use a different PayPal account, you need to delete the PayPal account you have on file and add a new one.

Paying with Venmo
Add Venmo as a form of payment to your Instacart account—
- Go to Settings
- Select Debit/Credit, PayPal, and more under Payment methods
- Select Add next to Venmo
- This redirects you to the Venmo login flow
- Follow the prompts to log into Venmo
- Select Update

Paying with Cash App
Add Cash App as a form of payment to your Instacart account—
- Go to Settings
- Select Debit/Credit, PayPal, and more under Payment methods
- Select Add next to Cash App
- If you already have Cash App installed, you’ll redirect to Cash App to link your Cash App and Instacart accounts.
- If you don’t have Cash App installed, download Cash App to complete the setup.
- Select Update

Other payment method restrictions
In addition to Paypal and Venmo, you also can’t use Klarna, EBT or FSA/HSA cards to purchase hemp-based CBD/THC products.
Troubleshooting
Here are some things to try if you can’t add a new card or your card declines—
- If you’re on a desktop, try switching browsers, reentering the payment card, or updating the card information on the app.
- If you’re on the app, try switching to a desktop.
- Make sure there are enough funds on your card to cover the authorization hold.
- If you’re getting a message that you can’t add any more cards today, wait 24 hours and try again.
- Reach out to us if you’re getting a 1369a error code.
